The Portuguese Insurance Regulator published remarks by its President, Margarida Corrêa de Aguiar, delivered at the opening of NOVA School of Law’s 3rd International Conference of the Jean Monnet Module on European Union insurance law, which this year focused on Sustainable Development Goal 1 on eradicating poverty. In her address, she framed insurance as an inclusive tool that can provide a financial safety net and help households that are poor or at risk of poverty maintain financial stability. She called on insurers, regulators and supervisors, academia, and policymakers to act within their respective remits to counter the negative correlation between financial vulnerability and access to insurance, including by creating conditions to expand protection through financially affordable solutions. On closing protection gaps, she reiterated the ASF’s contribution to the implementation of a system to cover seismic risk, described as particularly critical for Portugal given potential impacts on society, the economy, and the financial system, with general features presented at the conference by Hugo Borginho, Director of the ASF’s Risk Analysis and Solvency Department.
