The Ghana National Insurance Commission (NIC) has announced a collaboration with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to change the roadworthy certification process by requiring evidence of valid motor insurance before a vehicle can be issued or renewed with a roadworthy certificate. The update follows a meeting between DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey and Acting Commissioner of Insurance Dr Abiba Zakariah on reforms aimed at improving public protection for commuters and pedestrians. Under the proposed change, proof of a valid motor insurance cover would be required prior to completing the licensing process or the renewal of roadworthy certificates, reversing the current sequencing where roadworthy certification can be obtained before insurance is acquired.
