The Superintendency of Banks of the Dominican Republic has launched the “Verify first, protect your data” public awareness campaign to help people identify cyberattack and fraud attempts and verify requests before sharing personal or financial information. The first phase, “Anzuelo” (Bait), has been running since 5 August and mirrors common fraudster techniques by sending mass SMS and email messages and placing posters with QR codes. The lures include promises of attractive opportunities, product or entertainment offers, or warnings about supposed unauthorised activity on financial products. People who click through are redirected to an educational message from the Superintendency and its Office of User Services and Protection (ProUsuario) urging them to pause, assess the information, and confirm the source. The authority reported 7,882 interactions to date, comprising 4,114 email link accesses, 3,616 via SMS and 152 QR scans, and reiterated guidance to distrust urgent requests for sensitive data, avoid dubious links, verify via official channels, and change passwords where exposure is suspected. As the campaign moves into its “La Verdad” (The Truth) phase, educational and citizen guidance messages are being expanded to outdoor advertising, digital and traditional media, and the authority’s institutional channels.
