The Hong Kong Monetary Authority published a scam alert drawing attention to bank-issued warnings on fraudulent websites, fake internet banking login screens, phishing emails and other scams that have been reported to the HKMA. The alert references scams involving Bank of China Hong Kong Limited, which reported phishing instant messages, and China Construction Bank Asia Corporation Limited, which reported fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens. The HKMA reminded the public that banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, and will not request sensitive information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS. Anyone who has provided personal information or carried out transactions in response to the scams was advised to contact the relevant bank and report the matter to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre.
