The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued an alert to the public following a Bank of Communications (Hong Kong) Limited press release about a fraudulent mobile application that has been reported to the HKMA. The HKMA reminded customers that banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing users to bank websites to carry out transactions, and will not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS, including via embedded hyperlinks. It also advised anyone who provided personal information or conducted financial transactions via or in response to the app to contact the bank using the contact details in the bank’s press release and report the matter to the Police.
