The Central Bank of Ecuador published the main results of its Thematic Bioeconomy Account, a statistical tool to quantify the bioeconomy’s contribution to gross domestic product and assess its position within the national production system. The account estimates that the bioeconomy represented 16.6% of GDP at end-2024 and declined by 0.6% in a year when overall GDP contracted by 1.9%. The central bank’s analysis points to high levels of self-sufficiency and a growing orientation toward international markets, alongside a shift toward higher value-added activities and greater production diversity. It links the bioeconomy’s performance to both traditional sectors such as agriculture and agroindustry and the growth of industries that use biological resources; the update was presented in the context of the closing of a Bioeconomy Technical Assistance Fund led by the Ministry of Environment and Energy and supported by the French Development Agency, where the head of the Financial and Monetary Policy and Regulation Board highlighted the account’s role in supporting evidence-based decisions.
