The National Bank of Denmark has launched a final public campaign urging citizens to hand in DKK 1,000 banknotes and older banknote series ahead of their withdrawal from legal tender status on 31 May 2025. The phase-out covers the 1944, 1952, 1972 and 1997 banknote series alongside the DKK 1,000 note. Since the withdrawal was announced, banknotes worth DKK 20.6 billion have been handed in, but DKK 4.6 billion remains in circulation and cannot be used after 31 May 2025. The four-week campaign uses TV and radio spots and advertising in train stations, with support from retail chains, banks and municipalities; it begins on 14 April in Denmark and on 28 April in Greenland and the Faroe Islands, with an expected reach of 95% of adults more than five times. After 31 May 2025, the expired banknotes can still be redeemed for 12 months at the National Bank of Denmarkâs three depositing points in Aarhus, Odense and Copenhagen.
