The Central Bank of Kenya, working with the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics and Financial Sector Deepening Kenya, has launched the first Remittances Household Survey to strengthen data on international remittance flows to and from Kenyan households. The survey is intended to provide more comprehensive information on remittance amounts, uses, costs and challenges to inform policy, including by capturing remittances received through informal channels and in-kind (non-cash) support. The Central Bank of Kenya noted that it currently collects inflow data from authorised remittance service providers such as commercial banks, money transfer operators and mobile network operators, and that remittance inflows reached a record Ksh 666.7 billion in 2024, estimated at 4 percent of GDP, up from Ksh 586.0 billion in 2023. Fieldwork will run between July and September 2025, with survey personnel visiting selected households that have received or sent remittances.
