The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has opened its Cash Use in New Zealand survey until 10 October 2025 to track how New Zealanders access and use cash, with the findings intended to support work to redesign the cash system. The survey is being conducted by independent research company Rangahau Aotearoa Research New Zealand using a representative sample drawn from the Electoral Rolls, with voluntary responses submitted by post or online. Questions cover payment preferences, frequency and reasons for using cash, how often cash is withdrawn, how easy it is to withdraw or deposit cash, and whether people store cash and why, alongside new questions aimed at identifying challenges people may be experiencing in using cash. The Reserve Bank has run the survey every second year since 2017 and plans to move to annual surveying from 2025 to obtain more up-to-date information. Results are expected to be published in the first quarter of 2026.
