UK Parliament’s Treasury Committee has opened a new inquiry, “The OBR 15 years on”, and is inviting written evidence as it reviews the Office for Budget Responsibility’s first 15 years and its continuing role in supporting the United Kingdom’s economic stability and policymaking. Submissions are sought on the OBR’s historic performance, including the accuracy of its forecasting and its impartiality. The Committee is also asking how the OBR’s role and remit, and its working relationship with HM Treasury, could be reformed to help deliver positive economic outcomes; the Committee Chair pointed to the 2022 “mini-budget” as an example of the risks when the OBR is sidelined and framed the inquiry as an “honest conversation” intended to inform the incoming OBR Chair.
