The Sustainable Banking and Finance Network (SBFN), together with the Capacity-building Alliance of Sustainable Investment (CASI), convened a Sustainable Finance Taxonomies Roundtable in Johannesburg focused on improving harmonisation and implementation of sustainable finance taxonomies in Africa. Participants highlighted the need for greater interoperability between existing and emerging taxonomies in the region and globally to support cross-border investment flows and alignment with global standards. The session brought together regional and local policymakers, practitioners, and taxonomy experts, with nearly 20 participants discussing recent developments, shared challenges, and practical options to strengthen collaboration and alignment in taxonomy design and application. The roundtable forms part of the implementation of the Roadmap for Advancing Interoperability and Comparability of Sustainable Finance Taxonomies, launched at COP29 in November 2024 as a joint initiative involving the Central Bank of Azerbaijan, the International Finance Corporation, SBFN, the United Nations Development Programme, and the International Platform on Sustainable Finance. As follow-up, participants urged the organisers to create platforms for more effective regional knowledge sharing, assess how taxonomies can better support the Just Energy Transition, and identify ways to reduce complexity and reporting burdens for micro, small, and medium enterprises.
