The Bank of Albania published remarks by Governor Gent Sejko marking the anniversary of the National Commercial Bank (Banka Kombëtare Tregtare, BKT), focusing on the bank’s evolution since the early 1990s and its current systemic role in Albania’s banking sector. The address highlighted BKT’s contribution to financial stability and financing the real economy, alongside its investments in digitalisation, modern payment products and efforts to widen access to financial services. The speech traced BKT’s origins in the transition to a two-tier banking system and noted its privatisation in 2000 as a turning point in consolidation and modernisation. It also set out key operating and balance-sheet indicators, including more than 1,000 employees, around 850,000 clients, over 60 branches, a credit portfolio of ALL 113 billion, deposits of ALL 438 billion and an estimated 24% share of total banking-system assets. Governor Sejko additionally pointed to deepening Albania–Turkey economic ties and the role of Turkish investors in the banking sector, describing BKT as a bridge for bilateral cooperation.
