The South African Reserve Bank published its template on international reserves and foreign currency liquidity, covering the short-term foreign currency assets of the Bank and South Africa's central government and the foreign currency liabilities of both. Official reserve assets stood at USD 77,759 million at end-March 2026, comprising foreign currency reserves of USD 52,183 million, gold of USD 18,503 million, special drawing rights of USD 6,187 million, the International Monetary Fund reserve position of USD 886 million and other reserve assets of USD 22 million. Within foreign currency reserves, securities accounted for USD 35,929 million and deposits for USD 16,254 million, including USD 105 million with other central banks, the Bank for International Settlements and the International Monetary Fund, USD 4 million with banks headquartered in South Africa and USD 16,149 million with banks headquartered outside South Africa. Predetermined short-term net drains up to one year reflected central government outflows of USD 2,126 million in principal and USD 1,964 million in interest, partly offset by a USD 586 million long position in foreign currency forwards and futures. Contingent short-term net drains from other contingent liabilities totaled USD 1,309 million, comprising USD 978 million in principal and USD 331 million in interest. Memorandum items showed USD 74,302 million of reserves in Special Drawing Rights basket currencies including gold and USD 3,457 million in currencies outside the basket.
