The Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA) ran insurance training for public sector employees in Tanzania’s Simiyu Region, positioning insurance as a tool to protect government property and projects while also promoting participation in the sector through agency roles. At the opening of the training, Simiyu Regional Commissioner Kenani Kihongosi urged public servants to use the education to become insurance agents and instructed them to insure government buildings, vehicles and work equipment to protect against potential disasters. Insurance Commissioner Dr Baghayo Saqware framed the programme as insurance education for public servants, including information on opportunities in the insurance sector aimed at expanding the availability and distribution of insurance. TIRA’s Lake Zone Manager Richard Toyota highlighted market growth in Simiyu, reporting gross insurance premium increasing from TZS 5 million in 2022 to TZS 97 million in 2023, and noted the region currently has 13 insurance service providers comprising five agents, five bancassurance agents, two digital insurance sellers and one insurance company.
