The Monetary Authority of Macao and the China-Portugal Cooperation and Development Fund (FDCC) co-organised a thematic seminar on Sino-Portuguese finance to support Macao’s role as a “Sino-Lusophone Financial Services Platform”. Held on 13 February 2025 with support from the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao), the event drew around 80 finance professionals and brought together local and overseas firms and financial institutions active in Sino-Portuguese business. The FDCC outlined the investment environment in Portuguese-speaking countries and shared investment experience. Presentations from Mainland China companies involved in green energy in Lusophone markets and from Macao financial institutions covered examples of green investments and how Macao-based finance can support Lusophone countries’ green transition, including by providing financial facilities for energy infrastructure projects. A roundtable with four industry representatives discussed the financial services companies need when expanding into Portuguese-speaking countries, alongside related opportunities and challenges. AMCM and the FDCC noted that since 2019 they have held six thematic training and exchange activities for the local financial sector across topics including bonds, wealth management, fintech, financial leasing and investment cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries, with more than 300 participants in total. They plan to continue organising practical training activities on modern finance to strengthen sector expertise and talent development.
