The minority of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, led by Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren alongside Senator Bernie Sanders and 10 other senators, issued a letter to National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought, and U.S. Chief Statistician Mark Calabria requesting information on the Administration’s plans to implement changes to economic data collection, analysis, and reporting. The letter cites the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ delay of its annual Consumer Expenditure Survey to address a technical error and argues that repeated statements by the President and senior Administration officials have undermined confidence in federal economic data. It also raises concerns about allegations of political manipulation, including President Trump’s decision to fire Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Dr. Erika McEntarfer, which the senators describe as a break from longstanding statistical independence and a threat to public trust and data quality. The senators requested responses to their questions on data quality and public trust in federal economic data by October 6, 2025.
