The South African Reserve Bank released its statement of assets and liabilities as at 31 January 2025, showing total assets and liabilities of ZAR 1,281,173,273,310, down ZAR 248,770,265 from end-December 2024. Gold and foreign assets remained the dominant balance sheet component at ZAR 1,227,275,339,682. Gold increased to ZAR 210,803,620,051, alongside a higher rand gold price of ZAR 52,263.30 per fine ounce and gold holdings of 4,033,493 fine ounces. SDR holdings fell to ZAR 115,221,481,409 and foreign exchange reserves excluding SDRs declined to ZAR 901,250,238,222. On the liabilities side, notes and coin in circulation decreased to ZAR 167,678,695,410, while banks’ deposits increased to ZAR 334,409,304,373 and the gold and foreign exchange contingency reserve rose to ZAR 352,339,723,166; equity was unchanged apart from “other” equity, which increased to ZAR 18,461,405,595.

Notable changes included a decrease in SDR holdings and foreign exchange reserves, while banks’ deposits and the gold and foreign exchange contingency reserve increased.
