The Bank of Cape Verde, working with the National Institute of Statistics, held a survey from 10 to 16 February 2025 on the use of Bank of Cape Verde coins to deepen understanding of usage habits and practices and public satisfaction with coins in circulation. The information is intended to support indicators for planning cash (banknotes and coins) policy, including coin production, distribution, processing and oversight. The survey sits within the Bank’s awareness campaign to encourage coin circulation, including 2024 outreach that promoted returning hoarded coins to circulation to increase cash availability, facilitate making change, reduce public spending on replacing coins and limit environmental impacts. The Bank noted it has six circulating coin denominations (CVE 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100) minted in 1994 and reaching 30 years in circulation by end-2024, alongside commemorative coins also used for payments; it estimated 68.9 million coins in circulation and an average annual issuance of 2.3 million coins.
