Peru's Superintendency of Banking, Insurance and Pension Funds (SBS) held meetings in Iquitos with councillors of the Provincial Council of Maynas and Caja Municipal de Ahorro y Crédito Maynas (CMAC Maynas) to discuss the institution’s situation and outlook, corporate governance, and capital strengthening. The SBS also met with Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito San José Ltda. 178 as part of its ongoing engagement with savings and credit cooperatives (Coopac). The meetings, led by Superintendent Sergio Espinosa Chiroque, form part of an SBS programme of visits to CMAC-owning municipal councils and CMAC boards to deepen dialogue with shareholders and gather their views on issues relevant to CMACs and the regulatory framework. Engagement with Coopac is framed as a coordination strategy aimed at strengthening management and promoting greater transparency from cooperatives to their members; the SBS noted similar meetings with CMAC stakeholders in Cusco and Piura and with several Coopac in Cusco and Ayacucho, and linked its work to the role of microfinance institutions in serving nearly six million people with tailored financial products and services.
