The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) issued a public warning after becoming aware of fraudulent activity in which scammers claim to represent EIOPA and request payments or personal information from individuals. The Authority said fraudsters may misuse EIOPA’s name and logo or impersonate staff, using channels including post, email, phone calls, text messages, social media and fake documents. It highlighted common red flags such as requests to transfer money or pay administrative or insurance fees in exchange for promised services, offers to help recover funds, and urgent or “too good to be true” messages using suspicious email addresses, websites or payment details. EIOPA stressed it does not contact private individuals directly about services or the supervision of companies and never requests payments or personal information from private individuals. It advised recipients not to respond or send money, to use EIOPA’s official contact form if in doubt, and to report incidents to local law enforcement authorities.
