The Pensions Regulator (TPR) published an update from the Pension Scams Action Group’s Fighting Pension Fraud webinar, where the UK Fraud Minister, Lord Hanson, urged pension trustees and administrators to use “every touchpoint” with members to reinforce scam warning messages and prompt savers to stop and think before sharing personal information. More than 550 trustees, advisers and administrators were encouraged to commit to TPR’s Pledge to Combat Pension Scams, keep up to date on scam warnings, educate members on risks, and report suspicions to Report Fraud. TPR’s Head of Intelligence, Mike Broomfield, outlined PSAG’s work with the UK domain registry Nominet to proactively flag newly registered domains and disrupt potential scam sites, including sites identified using TPR’s AI website detection tool that promised tax-free access to pension pots before age 55; collaboration with the National Economic Crime Centre and Nominet led to many sites being taken down, and TPR has reviewed more than 1,000 suspicious websites to date. The update also highlighted the government’s Stop! Think Fraud campaign and explained that pension-fraud reports to Report Fraud are analysed by a TPR analyst embedded in the City of London Police and fed into active intelligence work. TPR said it is exploring further ways of dealing with repeat bad actors and developing additional disruption techniques with partners, and noted that the webinar (held in March) is available to watch online.
