The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued a public scam alert after being notified of incidents involving fraudulent websites, fake internet banking login screens, phishing emails and related scams connected to several banks’ services. The alert links to bank press releases concerning scams affecting The Bank of East Asia, Limited, Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited and Chong Hing Bank Limited (fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens), as well as The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited and OCBC Bank (Hong Kong) Limited (fraudulent websites). The HKMA also reminded the public that banks do not send SMS or emails containing embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, and do not request sensitive information such as login passwords or one-time passwords via phone, email or SMS. The HKMA advised anyone who has provided personal information or carried out financial transactions through or in response to the scams to contact the relevant bank using details in the bank’s press release and to report the matter to the Crime Wing Information Centre of the Hong Kong Police Force.
