The National Bank of Serbia announced that Serbia's banking sector is fully operational for cross border euro payments and collections with foreign counterparties through the SEPA Credit Transfer scheme, fully integrating the country into the Single Euro Payments Area. The central bank will execute SEPA payments for budget users, while 18 domestic commercial banks will provide SEPA payment services to households and businesses. The announcement states that the National Bank of Serbia coordinated the accession process with relevant domestic and international institutions and with commercial banks, meeting the technical, regulatory and operational conditions needed to apply SEPA payment schemes in Serbia. According to the central bank, the scheme should shorten execution times for foreign transactions, while fees for outgoing and incoming cross border payments are expected to become lower and more transparent. Common standards and rules should also improve predictability and security, simplify international business for Serbian companies, and make it easier for individuals to send and receive money from abroad.
