The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs published a minority press release in which Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren and Senator Elissa Slotkin urged the State Department Office of Inspector General, the Commerce Department Office of Inspector General, and the U.S. Office of Government Ethics to conduct a full investigation into potential conflicts of interest involving David Sacks, President Trump’s White House AI and Crypto Czar, and Steve Witkoff, the United States Special Envoy to the Middle East. The release follows the State Department Inspector General’s response that it was referring the request to the Office of Investigations for review. The lawmakers tied the request to a New York Times report on links between the Trump family’s cryptocurrency firm and an agreement giving the United Arab Emirates access to advanced artificial intelligence chips, and called for scrutiny of whether President Trump, his family, or senior Trump administration officials used their positions to benefit from foreign crypto deals. Warren also linked the issue to Congress’s consideration of crypto market structure legislation, while Slotkin pressed for findings to be made public. No timetable was provided for the Office of Investigations’ review.
