The National Bank of Denmark has put a security-upgraded DKK 50 banknote into circulation, completing the security upgrade of the current 2009 banknote series. The upgraded note retains the existing colours and motifs but adds new security features intended to make counterfeiting more difficult. The upgraded notes are designated the 2009A series and are described as very similar to the original versions, with slight differences. The DKK 50 upgrade follows earlier upgrades to the DKK 500 note in 2020 and the DKK 100 and DKK 200 notes in 2024, and brings the DKK 50 note’s security level into line with the rest of the series. Both the original and upgraded versions remain legal tender until new Danish banknotes are issued in 2028-2029. Separately, the DKK 1,000 banknote and all older banknote series remain no longer legal tender, but can be redeemed at three banknote exchange points in Denmark until 31 May 2026.
