The European Central Bank published the disaggregated financial statement of the Eurosystem for the reference date of 29 May 2026. The consolidated balance sheet showed total assets and total liabilities of EUR 16,162,017 million. On the asset side, the statement included EUR 92,557 million in gold and gold receivables, EUR 521,300 million in claims on non-euro area residents denominated in foreign currency, and EUR 28,206 million in lending to euro area credit institutions related to monetary policy operations. The liability side showed EUR 1,624,805 million in banknotes in circulation and EUR 2,372,516 million in liabilities to euro area credit institutions related to monetary policy operations. Those monetary policy liabilities comprised EUR 174,464 million in current accounts covering the minimum reserve system and EUR 2,198,051 million in the deposit facility. The release also noted that the capital and reserves item can be negative for individual national central banks because it includes accumulated losses carried forward, while stating that Eurosystem central banks can still operate effectively and fulfil their price stability mandate even if they incur financial losses.
