The Department of Finance Canada published an update on Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne’s visit to the People’s Republic of China, highlighting the launch of a Canada-China Financial Working Group aimed at supporting bilateral cooperation, including in financial services. The working group was agreed through a joint statement signed by Minister Champagne and People’s Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng. During the Beijing programme, the minister met Vice Premier He Lifeng to discuss global macroeconomic developments and strengthening the bilateral economic relationship, including two-way trade and investment. He also held talks with Finance Minister Lan Fo’an, and met Canadian businesses operating in China, as well as representatives of China National Offshore Oil Corporation and Agricultural Bank of China. The visit included participation by Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem and Superintendent of Financial Institutions Peter Routledge. The working group was framed as a key outcome under the Canada-China Economic and Trade Cooperation Roadmap agreed by both leaders in January, and Minister Champagne invited his counterparts to visit Canada in the fall for further exchanges.
