The National Bank of Moldova hosted the high-level conference “BNM 2025 – European Momentum: One year of progress and integration”, focusing on the transformation of Moldova’s financial system and its connection to European financial infrastructure, with SEPA integration presented as a core deliverable. The event highlighted early usage data following Moldova’s operational integration into the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) on 6 October 2025. Within 60 days, SEPA became the main channel for euro cross-border payments, exceeding SWIFT, with over 130,000 of roughly 208,000 cross-border transactions processed via SEPA (62%), rising to above 70% in November. Speakers also pointed to uptake of the MIA instant payments system, described as having over 800,000 users, and a German Economic Team analysis that linked SEPA accession to lower transaction costs, more efficient cross-border payments and improved competitiveness. The conference concluded with the launch of a commemorative coin, “Moldova in the Single Euro Payments Area”, under a new “European Moldova” series. In closing remarks, Governor Anca Dragu framed SEPA participation as a starting point for a next phase focused on consolidating European financial integration alongside further digitalisation and innovation, while maintaining financial stability.
