Payments Canada issued an alert about a phishing scam email that impersonates its regulation team and uses the subject line “Incoming Transaction — Payments Canada”. The message claims the recipient is being sent a transaction on behalf of Payments Canada and includes an attachment purportedly containing further details, followed by a request to contact the sender directly to verify the payment. Payments Canada stated it will never contact the general public to initiate a payment and advised recipients not to open attachments or click links in suspicious emails or text messages, to independently verify suspicious requests even if they appear to come from a known person or organization, and not to provide personal information by email, text message, or phone. It also advised deleting the message and contacting a financial institution if fraud is suspected or unauthorized account activity is identified, and directed readers to the Government of Canada’s Get Cyber Safe resources for more information on phishing and fraudulent websites.
