The Chile Financial Market Commission (CMF) issued a public alert about scams in which fraudsters impersonate the CMF and its staff through phone calls, documents, emails and home visits. It stressed that CMF personnel do not contact bank account holders or customers of other financial entities to obtain personal information or access credentials, offer insurance or investments, request wire transfers or other banking operations to access loans, or report alleged fraud affecting their accounts. The warning follows an unusual increase in recent weeks in public inquiries and concerns about alleged CMF communications, including home visits, requesting financial information and the handover of credit or debit cards and security devices. The CMF is investigating complaints and said it will take the communication and legal measures it deems appropriate. It also pointed the public to its website Fraud Alerts Page, which allows users to verify whether a person or entity offering financial products or services is supervised by the CMF, review alerts issued by the CMF and foreign regulators on unregulated entities or activities, and access other investor and customer protection guidance.
