The Central Bank of Russia published results of an opinion poll on Russians’ payment preferences in 2024, showing a continued split between cash and cashless use. Around 10% of households clearly opted for cashless payments, while 9% reported paying only in cash. Among cashless methods, the most popular were bank cards (77%), mobile transfers and online banking (44%), and the Faster Payments System (34%), with respondents citing speed, ease and convenience. Cash was often preferred for its universal usability, with a quarter of respondents using it in daily transactions, most frequently at small stores, markets, filling stations or on public transport; half kept cash on hand for situations where cashless payments might be impossible, and a third held their savings in cash.
