The Bank of Finland published second-quarter 2025 payment statistics showing that the total value of contactless card payments exceeded the value of chip and magnetic stripe payments for the first time in 2025. Finnish payment cards were used for 652 million payments in April–June 2025, up 3% year on year, with a record quarterly aggregate value of EUR 19.7 billion. Contactless payments accounted for 431 million transactions, an 8% increase from a year earlier, while their aggregate value rose 23% to EUR 8.4 billion. By contrast, chip or magnetic stripe payments fell to 95 million transactions, down 24%, and their value declined 19% to EUR 6.4 billion. Remote card payments initiated on a computer or mobile device totalled 125 million (up 19%), with value up 18% to EUR 4.9 billion; spending with Finnish cards in other EU Member States reached EUR 2.5 billion (up 25%) and spending outside the EU was EUR 0.4 billion (up 11%). Credit transfers totalled 312 million (down 3%), while their aggregate value increased 7% to EUR 995 billion, with nearly 80% of value directed to Finnish counterparties. The figures have been added to the payment statistics dashboard, and the next quarterly release is scheduled for 16 December 2025.
