The Italian Institute for Insurance Supervision (IVASS) issued an alert over the circulation of counterfeit insurance documentation used to market surety bond policies in the name of HDI Versicherung AG, which the insurer has disowned. The false paperwork includes a document described as a “delibera di fideiussione assicurativa” that appears to have been issued by an HDI Versicherung AG establishment in the Slovak Republic. IVASS noted that HDI Versicherung AG is an Austria-headquartered insurer supervised by Austria’s Financial Market Authority (Finanzmarktaufsicht, FMA) and is authorised to operate in Italy under freedom of services in several non-life classes, including class 15 (suretyship), but it does not issue surety bond policies, as also indicated in the Register of Insurance Undertakings and Groups (RIGA). The firm also informed IVASS that the email address info@hdiversicherungag.it and the certified email (PEC) address hdiversicherungag@pec-legal.it are not attributable to the company. IVASS urged consumers to exercise caution and, before paying any premium, to verify that quotes and contracts relate to duly authorised insurers and intermediaries by consulting IVASS’s lists and registers, including the suretyship authorisation list with online policy verification, the Single Register of Insurance Intermediaries (RUI), and IVASS alerts on counterfeiting and unauthorised entities.
