The Austrian National Bank (OeNB) announced a special exhibition at its in-house Money Museum to mark 100 years since the schilling became the official means of payment in Austria’s First Republic on 1 March 1925. Titled “Es war einmal ... der Schilling”, the exhibition is structured in nine chapters tracing the currency’s history, including its reintroduction in 1945 and its replacement by the euro in 1999 (book money) and 2002 (cash). The OeNB noted that around ATS 6.8 billion from the last schilling series remains in circulation despite the currency no longer being usable for payments since 2002, and that banknotes from the last series can be exchanged for euro at the OeNB without time limit. The exhibition opens to the public from 19 August 2025 and is accessible Tuesday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00 at the OeNB’s headquarters at Otto-Wagner-Platz in Vienna.
