Latvia's Ministry of Finance announced that Finance Minister Arvils Ašeradens and ministry officials will participate in the Eurogroup and EU Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) meetings in Brussels on 20–21 January, focusing on euro area priorities and challenges for 2024–2029 and the Polish Presidency’s work programme. Eurogroup discussions are set to cover the new economic policy cycle, including the European Commission’s seven priorities for 2024–2029 and its view on euro area recommendations for 2025, alongside innovations in wholesale payments and the state of play on the digital euro. ECOFIN is expected to hear and debate the Polish Presidency’s priorities for the first half of 2025, including Single Market streamlining, boosting EU competitiveness, strengthening the Capital Markets Union to mobilise more private capital for the economy, green financing and digital transformation, and efforts to lower energy prices and reduce regulatory burden, as well as work on EU defence capabilities, the financial aspects of support for Ukraine and the revenue side of the EU budget. Ministers are also scheduled to address implementation of the EU economic governance framework, the 2025 European Semester, Europe’s economic recovery and financial services legislative proposals, alongside tax files, customs union reform and the EU budget for 2026.
