The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) reported that an AUSTRAC intelligence report helped authorities arrest a man later charged with importing a commercial quantity of drugs, after 40 kg of methamphetamine and cocaine were discovered in abandoned luggage in Sydney. The alert enabled authorities to stop a Singaporean national who flew from Malaysia to Sydney on 20 February and left two large suitcases containing the drugs on a baggage carousel. The Australian Federal Police located and detained the 55-year-old in Adelaide on 21 February as he attempted to board a flight to Malaysia, and he appeared in the Downing Centre Local Court on 26 February. AUSTRAC said its analysts combine financial reporting data from businesses with other information, tools and specialist tradecraft to produce targeted financial intelligence for government and law enforcement partners, which can trigger further investigations into offences including money laundering, drug trafficking and other serious and organised crime.
