De Nederlandsche Bank published balance of payments and international investment position statistics showing the United States has been the largest net international investor in the Netherlands for years. By end-2024, US investments in the Netherlands totalled EUR 1,822 billion versus EUR 1,496 billion of Dutch investment in the United States, leaving a net external asset balance of EUR -326 billion. More than half of US investment is direct investment by multinationals in Dutch subsidiaries, with part of these funds then flowing on to business units in other countries as outward investment from the Netherlands. Luxembourg (EUR -242 billion) and Germany (EUR -156 billion) were the next largest net investors, more often via securities holdings such as shares in Dutch listed companies. Separately, the Netherlands’ net external assets rose to EUR 676 billion at end-2024 (up EUR 111 billion), with external assets of EUR 10,079 billion and liabilities of EUR 9,403 billion; the increase was mainly driven by financial transactions and exchange rate movements, including a net EUR 116 billion rise in the contribution of securities holdings, even though securities holdings still made a EUR -551 billion contribution overall while direct investment provided the largest positive balance at EUR 795 billion.
