The National Bank of Belgium’s Individual Credit Register has published its annual statistical report for 2025, setting out the latest data on registered credit agreements and payment defaults. The report reflects a 2024 expansion in the register’s data collection scope and changes to the technical collection system and data model, which created breaks in some statistical series. As a result, figures for 2024 and 2025 are not fully comparable with earlier years, especially where a visible break appears between 2023 and 2024. The report’s first section presents key figures, including newly collected data on instruments that are recorded only in the event of default and on unauthorised overdrafts on payment accounts not linked to a credit agreement. Sections 2 and 3 cover credit agreements recorded at origination and related payment defaults. Among the main trends, the rise in new mortgage loans that began in 2024 continued in 2025, reaching 264,704 new loans, while new instalment sales fell further to 25,016 agreements, extending the decline seen in previous years.
