The Central Bank of Mexico, through its Directorate General of Payment Systems and Market Infrastructures, has opened its 2025 Internal Summer Researchers Programme for PhD students to undertake supervised research projects on payment systems and related market infrastructure topics. The placement is in-person at the central bank’s facilities, scheduled for July and August, with a maximum duration of 60 calendar days. Eligible applicants must be enrolled in a PhD programme in economics, finance (including computational finance), computer science, computational statistics, data science, or related fields, have completed at least three years of study, and have English proficiency (Spanish preferred). Applications must include a research proposal and workplan deliverable within the programme timeframe, covering topics such as privacy-enhancing technologies for personal data in digital payments, market structure and competition in payment systems, forecasting with high-frequency payments data, links between payment systems and financial inclusion, payments innovation, operational and liquidity risk indicators and systemic risk propagation, and the effects of regulation on payment systems and market infrastructures, alongside a CV, academic record (or university letter), and an academic recommendation. Applications close on 5 May 2025, with selected proposals to be notified by 23 May 2025. Selected researchers will contract with the central bank and may receive total pre-tax fees up to USD 6,900, comprising airfare support (up to USD 1,500), two monthly research payments of USD 1,500, a performance-based additional payment of up to USD 2,000 based on assessed impact and usefulness, and up to USD 200 per month for meals (or an equivalent form of support), subject to contracting and tax documentation requirements.
