The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) published quarterly statistics on payment cards issued in Hong Kong for Q4 2025, covering credit and debit card activity under the schemes of eight payment card scheme operators. The release shows a sharp increase in credit cards in circulation and continued growth in credit card transaction volumes and values, alongside mixed year-on-year results for debit card transaction activity. Credit cards in circulation reached 28.99 million by end-Q4 2025, up 15.6% quarter-on-quarter and 38.4% year-on-year. Credit card transactions totalled 393.96 million (up 3.0% quarter-on-quarter and 16.1% year-on-year) with a total value of HKD 311.6 billion (up 9.1% quarter-on-quarter and 14.8% year-on-year), comprising HKD 201.6 billion (64.7%) in Hong Kong retail spending, HKD 100.3 billion (32.2%) in overseas retail spending and HKD 9.6 billion (3.1%) in cash advances. The HKMA did not publish a total number of debit cards in circulation due to overlapping debit card brands on a single card; debit card transactions related to retail sales and bill payments rose 2.7% quarter-on-quarter to 53.7 million and increased 11.0% in value to HKD 69.6 billion, but fell 3.2% and 4.6% respectively versus Q4 2024.
