The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced a new service schedule for the two “Coin Carts” under its Coin Collection Programme covering 23 March 2026 to 31 May 2026, with the full timetable and programme details published on the HKMA website. Since the programme launched in October 2014 up to 1 February 2026, the Coin Carts have completed 1,454,000 transactions and collected 1,106 million coins with a total face value of HKD 1,787 million, which are re-circulated to meet demand. The Coin Carts rotate across Hong Kong’s 18 districts, typically staying at each location for one week, with service hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; each vehicle has two coin counting machines, on-site staff support, and an electrical wheelchair lift. Users can exchange coins for banknotes or add value to stored-value facilities such as Octopus Cards and e-wallets (including AlipayHK, Octopus Wallet, Tap&Go and WeChat Pay), and the service is free of charge; a Community Chest donation box is also available. Location selection prioritises sites that are convenient and do not disrupt traffic and pedestrian flow, with preference for venues with suitable power supply (including Leisure and Cultural Services Department mobile library service locations) to reduce the need for stand-by generators. The HKMA stated it takes account of comments from district councils and the public and consults the Transport Department and the Hong Kong Police Force as necessary, and it will continue to review the programme and update the service schedule regularly.
