The Central Bank of the Philippines, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), reported that more than 500 students at Southern Leyte State University opened their first bank accounts on 14 August 2025 through the Youth Financial Inclusion (YFI) Initiative. Launched in January 2025, YFI is a project of the Financial Inclusion Steering Committee (FISC), an interagency body chaired by the BSP, and focuses on building youth financial inclusion and financial health by onboarding students into transaction accounts as a gateway to broader financial services. During the Southern Leyte activity, BSP resource persons briefed students on the benefits of financial inclusion, initiatives in Eastern Visayas, and the importance of financial education before students opened accounts with participating financial service providers. The campaign was described as the first of its kind to be organized and led entirely by YFI Ambassadors for Visayas as part of the university’s General Student Assembly, with more than 1,100 students attending the onboarding activity; the initiative is supported by FISC member agencies including the Department of Information and Communications Technology, the Department of Finance – Bureau of the Treasury, and the National Youth Commission, and also received support from the Presidential Communications Office.
