The National Bank of Ukraine hosted the Second International Scientific Conference “Money & Banking: The History and Future of Money” on 18–19 September 2025 as part of Hryvnia Day, bringing together scholars and central bank experts to examine monetary history and discuss trends and challenges in modern banknote and coin design. In opening remarks, Deputy Governor Oleksii Shaban linked the hryvnia’s symbolism with technological change and noted that more countries, including Ukraine, are working on central bank digital currencies. Around 70 researchers from Ukraine and Europe participated, including representatives from the European Central Bank and the central banks of Germany, Belgium, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. The programme ran across four tracks—banking history, design and protection of money, the future of money, and numismatics—covering topics such as future euro design and security features, commemorative coin initiatives, research on the authenticity of Kyiv Rus hryvnias using modern measuring devices, and restoration of the numismatic collection of the Mykola Sumtsov Kherson Historical Museum following theft during the Russian occupation; the online broadcast was watched by over 2,000 viewers. The National Bank of Ukraine said it plans to invite scholars to continue the discussions at next year’s conference.
