The Central Reserve Bank of El Salvador announced the rollout of the National Household Income and Expenditure Survey, a one-year statistical exercise that will cover about 20,000 households nationwide. The survey will collect updated information on household income, consumption patterns and time use, providing the first survey of this kind in more than 20 years and supporting the bank's role in macroeconomic and census statistics. Using a randomly selected sample designed to ensure representative results, the survey will run over 26 fortnights, with each selected household visited for one two-week period. Three modules will gather sociodemographic information, income received by household members, and daily, monthly, quarterly and annual spending. The results are intended to support public policy and update the methodology for indicators such as the Consumer Price Index, as well as the products included in the Basic Food Basket. Data collection will be fully digital, with real-time validation and quality controls, and responses will be protected by statistical secrecy and used only in aggregated form. Selected households are being asked to keep receipts and purchase records to facilitate reporting. After completing the two-week survey period, participating households will receive USD 100 through the bank's PAY digital payment system.
