The British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission (FSC) issued a public statement warning the public about fraudulent emails and impersonation attempts involving individuals falsely claiming to be FSC staff or otherwise connected to the FSC. The FSC cautioned recipients not to treat such messages as legitimate communications and to avoid downloading attachments or clicking links that could compromise devices or systems. The FSC highlighted emails using the subject line “AML/CFT 101 Financial Sanctions” that include malicious links and or attachments and seek to prompt file downloads, as well as other messages aimed at initiating further contact under false pretences. It noted that sender names may appear credible while the underlying addresses come from unofficial or unauthorised domains, and reminded recipients that official FSC emails originate from the FSC’s authorised domain. The statement was issued under Section 37A(4) of the Financial Services Commission Act, 2001.
