The New Brunswick Financial and Consumer Services Commission published a consumer alert urging residents to use caution when dealing with door-to-door salespeople, following reports of direct sellers operating without a licence and misleading promotion of home services and equipment via social media ads, telemarketing calls and in-person sales. The Commission reminded consumers that all direct sellers must be licensed and must carry their licence while conducting business, and encouraged residents to ask for proof and verify status through the Commission’s Direct Sellers Database. It also highlighted key consumer rights and safeguards, including receiving a copy of the contract and the legal right to cancel a direct sales contract for any reason within 10 days after receiving the copy, and flagged common high-pressure or deceptive tactics such as “one-time offer” claims, “free” inspections used to solicit sales, misrepresenting affiliation with a municipality or utility, and making alarming claims about unsafe home conditions without allowing time to seek a second opinion.
