The U.S. Department of Justice announced that a federal jury in Sherman, Texas convicted LaShonda Moore and Marlon Moore for running the multi-million-dollar “Blessings in No Time” (BINT) chain-referral pyramid scheme during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to court documents and trial evidence, the scheme operated from June 2020 to June 2021 and used weekly live-stream broadcasts to recruit participants nationwide with promises of 800% returns on a USD 1,400 payment and a guaranteed refund. BINT used “playing boards” with multiple tiers in which eight new recruits funded payouts to the top “Water” position, after which participants moved up and were required to recruit additional entrants, while the Moores placed themselves in positions to receive payments and diverted substantial funds. The DOJ stated that the scheme defrauded more than 10,000 victims and caused more than USD 25 million in losses. Each defendant was convicted of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, five counts of wire fraud, and three counts of money laundering; sentencing has not been set. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, U.S. Secret Service, and IRS Criminal Investigation investigated the case.
