The Bermuda Monetary Authority announced it has achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification for BMA House and received two international awards recognising the design and security features of Bermuda’s new two- and five-dollar banknotes, describing both as milestones in its sustainability strategy. LEED certification confirms BMA House at 43 Victoria Street in Hamilton is operated and maintained to a high sustainability standard, and places it among a small number of LEED-certified buildings in Bermuda. The Authority attributed the certification to measures spanning sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality, with upgrades beginning in 2023. On banknotes, the five-dollar note won the International Bank Note Society’s Bank Note of the Year for 2024, and the two- and five-dollar notes jointly received the High Security Printing Latin America Award for Best New Banknote for 2025, both citing innovative security features. The notes are printed by De La Rue on polymer substrate, with the Authority stating the material extends lifespan to around two and a half times that of the previous cotton notes and includes accessibility features such as tactile dots, alongside multiple anti-counterfeiting elements including transparent windows, UV-reactive features and microtext.
