Greece’s Ministry of National Economy and Finance published a readout of a meeting between Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis and Romania’s Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare, focused on strengthening bilateral coordination on connectivity and energy cooperation, as well as the broader EU economic agenda. The discussions also covered simplifying European procedures and the regulatory framework, negotiations on the new Multiannual Financial Framework, and closer tax and customs cooperation. The release highlighted bilateral trade approaching EUR 3 billion and Greek business investments in Romania exceeding EUR 4 billion, mainly in energy, infrastructure and construction. Energy cooperation was framed around the planned operation of a vertical natural gas transport corridor linking Greece with Romania and Ukraine, presented as important for energy security in Eastern Europe; the ministers also referenced cooperation in public revenue and fiscal governance, and coordination in EU forums including ECOFIN. Greece reiterated support for Romania’s full integration into the Schengen Area and backed Romania’s OECD accession bid, citing practical support including a tax policy workshop hosted in Athens in July by Greece’s Independent Authority for Public Revenue for Romanian tax administration officials. Nazare indicated Romania is targeting OECD membership in 2026, encouraged further Greek investment beyond EUR 4 billion, and pointed to ongoing exchanges on public-private partnerships as Romania prepares a PPP project pipeline with the finance ministry in a coordinating role. He invited Pierrakakis to visit Bucharest, ideally in early 2026, to advance the bilateral agenda.
