The Bank of Botswana has announced it will issue a limited-edition P50 commemorative banknote as part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations marking 50 years of existence. The new note will be legal tender and is intended to circulate alongside the existing P50 banknote featuring Sir Seretse Khama. The Bank selected the P50 denomination for its direct link to the 50-year milestone and described the commemorative banknote as its first such banknote, following earlier commemorative coin issues. The design retains the current P50 tourism theme while adding Golden Jubilee elements, with the front featuring the Bank’s redeveloped headquarters building (PulaThebe) and the Motswedi diamond, and the reverse featuring Botswana’s 2024 Olympians Letsile Tebogo, Bayapo Ndori, Busang Kebinatshipi and Anthony Pesela. Security features broadly align with the existing P50, with additional anticounterfeiting enhancements including replacing the holographic strip with a thread showing an animated running effect. The commemorative P50 is not yet in circulation; the Bank plans an intensive public education campaign before issuing it on a date to be announced. It is expected to remain in use until removed through natural attrition in line with the clean banknotes policy.
